Helpful Tips and Information:
S’mores Oatmeal Ingredients and Substitutions:
(A full list of ingredients, plus specific measurements, can be found in the recipe card below.)
- Old fashioned oats – We usually always cook with old-fashioned rolled oats, because we like the creamy, yet slightly chewy texture and that they cook up in about 5-10 minutes. However, steel cut oats or quick cooking oats can be used in this recipe. Simply adjust the cooking times according to the package directions.
- Instant hot cocoa mix – The hot cocoa mix adds the chocolate flavor plus sweetness. However, for a better for you option, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder or chocolate flavored collagen peptides can be substituted. If using protein powder or collagen peptides, stir in once the oatmeal is done cooking and you have removed it from the heat. 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, plus 1-2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey, can also be substituted for the hot cocoa mix.
- Kosher salt – Just a dash to enhance the chocolate flavor.
- Milk – Milk adds richness and creaminess that water alone can’t provide. Use your preferred milk type. We have tested this recipe with 2%, 1% and skim milk, as well as, almond milk and coconut milk – all have worked fine.
- Water – For a more creamy oatmeal, replace the water with additional milk.
- Vanilla extract
- Mini semi-sweet chocolate chips – Just a few for deep, melty chocolate flavor.
- Mini marshmallows – Just a few for that classic s’mores flavor profile. Toasting them with a kitchen torch is strictly optional.
- Honey graham crackers – Adds to that classic smore’s flavor and a crunchy texture.
Additional Chocolate Oatmeal Topping Ideas and Mix-In Suggestions:
- Sliced bananas
- Sliced strawberries
- Drizzle of peanut butter (melt peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds for easy drizzling)
- Coconut flakes
- Chopped peanuts or pecans
- Ground flax seeds
- Hemp seeds
- Chia seeds
- Protein powder
- Peanut butter powder
- Additional milk for serving
Expert Oatmeal Cooking Tips:
- Use all milk instead of half milk, half water → makes it ultra creamy
- Stir often → prevents sticking/burning and creates that velvety texture
- Let it rest for 2-4 minutes before serving → oatmeal thickens as it cools
- Cook over medium-low heat → oatmeal burns easily, watch carefully
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do you make oatmeal creamy instead of watery?
Use all milk (instead of half milk and half water), cook slowly over low heat and stir often.
Can I make oatmeal ahead of time?
Yes! Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat with a splash of milk. See below for reheating instructions.
Is chocolate oatmeal healthy?
This S’mores Oatmeal recipe is definitely a more a special occasion or every once in a while treat, since it does include marshmallows, chocolate chips and graham crackers. However, to make it a bit more healthy, you could replace the hot cocoa mix with chocolate protein powder or cocoa powder and a little natural sweetener, like honey or maple syrup.
How to reheat oatmeal:
Stove Top: Place refrigerated oatmeal in a sauce pan over medium-low heat. Add enough milk to partially cover the oatmeal. Stir to combine. Continue stirring and cooking over medium-low heat until the oatmeal is creamy and heated through.
Microwave: Place refrigerated oatmeal in a microwave safe glass or ceramic bowl. Add several splashes of milk. Microwave on high heat for 1-2 minutes. Remove from the microwave and stir. Add additional milk if needed. Return to the microwave and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until heated through. Use caution as the bowl will be hot.
