I am so excited for the holiday season! Thanksgiving is just days away and I couldn’t be more giddy to eat, sleep, watch football and visit with family! Then after Thanksgiving is Christmas! We have so much planned… getting our real live Christmas tree, going to go see The Christmas Story (the play), going to the Trail of Lights, making a gingerbread house, buying and making gifts for friends and family! (Squeal!) One thing that I always try to do when I give gifts, is give the gift receiver something memorable. This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or take a lot of time. Because of this, I try and avoid giving gift cards or money. Sure, gift cards and money are easy and will please anyone. I mean who doesn’t love cold, hard cash or a gift card to their favorite store or restaurant?!? But who really remembers such an impersonable gift. But today I am sharing a completely adorable homemade candy, money and gift card holder, to give those special people in your life a little ‘Extra’ something this holiday season!
These felt mittens are so festive and cute and fun to make! They can be filled with some Extra Gum, candy canes, money or gift cards! They make the best stocking stuffers or an easy, yet memorable gift for a teacher, friend, neighbor, or co-worker.
And if you have been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know how much I absolutely love cute gifts incorporating sayings using candy or food (check out my candy cards here and here); so I had to add a gift tag to my felt mittens saying, “A little “Extra” something just for you!” Get it?!? Give Extra Gum in an adorable homemade felt mitten with some ‘extra’ spending money or even a Walmart gift card. Who is not going to want to get one of these this Christmas!

Time: 30-45 minutes Supply Cost: $5-10
Supplies:
Red, green and/or white felt (or desired color)
Red, green and/or white embroidery floss (or desired color)
Colored pompoms
Pre-made holiday decorations (such as mini Santa hats or Christmas trees)
Rick rack or ribbon
Hot glue gun or fabric glue
Hot glue sticks
Pen or pencil

Paper

Sewing pins and needles
Holiday gift tags
Extra Gum (in assorted flavors), money and/or gift cards.
1. Gather supplies.
2. Trace your hand (fingers closed) or a pre-made glove/mitten onto the paper, making sure the mitten opening (where your hand would go in) is at least 3 ½ to 4 inches in length. Cut out mitten shape.
3. Pin mitten stencil to green felt.
4. Using sharp scissors, cut around mitten. Repeat cutting process with mitten stencil and a second piece of felt. Note: If your scissors are sharp, you can save time by pinning and cutting two pieces of felt at the same time. Remove stencil and pin together two cut out pieces of felt.
5. Using embroidery floss, thread needle and tie a knot in the bottom of the thread. Starting on the top of one side of the mitten, begin sewing the two pieces of felt together, using the loop stitch.
6. Continue sewing all the way around the outside of the mitten, creating as tight of a stitch as you would like, until you reach the other top side of the mitten. Leave the top of the mitten (where you would stick your hand in) open.
7. Once sewn to the top, tie off embroidery floss and set mitten aside.
8. Using red felt, pen and ruler, lightly draw a 1-inch wide by 7-8 inch long strip on felt. Cut out felt strip. This will be used to wrap around the top of the mitten so make sure it is long enough before you begin sewing.
9. Using embroidery floss, thread needle and tie a knot in the bottom of the thread. Starting on the bottom of one side of the strip of felt, begin sewing in a straight line, using a running or straight stitch. Once at the end of the strip of felt, secure embroidery floss by tying a knot at the back of the felt strip. Repeat running stitch on top of felt strip.
10. Using fabric glue or hot glue gun, place glue on the bottom, inside of the felt strip. Glue felt strip around the top of the mitten. Add additional glue to the side of the felt strip to secure side.
11. Using hot glue gun or fabric glue, attach additional decorations, such as pompoms and pre-made felt adornments (such as mini red Santa hats).
12. Cut a 3-4-inch piece of rick rack or ribbon. Shape piece of rick rack into a loop shape, using hot glue gun or fabric glue, glue together the two end pieces of fabric. Glue rick rack loop to the inside of the mitten.
13. Gather goodies to stuff into mitten, such as Extra Gum, money and/or gift cards.
14. Using another piece of ribbon attach gift tag that reads: “A little “Extra” something just for you!”
15. Give your goodie filled homemade holiday mitten away to someone special!
