Over the years I have rambled on and on about how I got started cooking, well baking, at a really young age. Baking was something my Mom thoroughly enjoyed doing. She would bake chocolate chip cookies, banana bread and pies year round for various holidays and family functions.
My Mom was also very adamant that as part of our family holiday traditions, we would bake sugar cookies, in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and decorate them with pounds of sweet icing and colorful sprinkles.
It’s no wonder that I too fell in love with cake and cookie decorating and have taken a bunch of cookie, cake and cake pop decorating classes and really worked on honing my skills.
Nope, no plopping on buttercream frosting and dumping on sprinkles, I became skilled at “painting” cookies with royal icing and even made a few wedding cakes and groom’s cakes for friend’s and family members’ weddings.
I don’t do as much cake and cookie decorating as I used to, but it is still something I love to do every once and awhile for a special occasion.
Needless to say, over the years I have acquired quite a bit of cake/cookie decorating supplies. From an over abundance of cookie cutters, to an assortment of baking sheets and cake pans, to thousands of colorful sprinkles; this little hobby has taken over a large chunk of my kitchen.
In fact, recently I was struggling to make all my baking supplies fit in my small kitchen. I have had to use some organizing hacks and really make use of every inch of space in my home.
Luckily the kitchen isn’t THAT small, but for someone who cooks for a living and has an obsession with baking supplies, it was hard getting everything to fit. I ended up having to transport a coat closet near the kitchen into an extra pantry and then took over a corner of a spare closet in one of the bedrooms to store the overflow of baking supplies.
Since I’ve been so busy, this corner of baking supplies was kind of just thrown together. Needless to say it was time for an overhaul!
Because of the small and limited space, and a tight budget, I had to get creative with my baking closet makeover and find affordable, yet functional home storage solutions.
Before (see below), things were just thrown in a rolling cart with shelves and cheap plastic containers and zip top baggies, that didn’t really have a way to sort anything or store things properly.
I decided to head to my local craft store to see what they had in their craft organization and storage supply section. I was happy to see the large selection of home storage products!
After going through everything my craft store had to offer, I settled on a few Creative Option products, as well as some other craft storage containers. I’ve used similar products in the past to store and organize my craft supplies, but then it dawned on me that they could be used to help store and organize my baking supplies.
Not only was there a variety of Creative Option products, to help organize ALL of my baking supplies, I like these products because of how durable and functional they are. I found something for everything and the end result was not only more organized, but cleaner too.
So here’s what I did!
Baking Supply Organizing Ideas:
Cookie Cutters: I found the some project boxes the best for storing cookie cutters. I sorted the cookie cutters by theme, holiday, animal, letters and numbers, sports, etc. And assigned one box per category and added chalkboard labels.
Cupcake Liners: These project boxes are also great for storing cupcake liners, for quick and easy access and to keep them from getting smashed.
I liked these boxes for storing both of these baking items because these boxes are sturdy, can be tightly latched, and stack neatly on top of each other for easy storage.
Sprinkles and Food Coloring: For these baking essentials I like the Creative Options Two Tray Boxes since you can arrange smaller items on top and larger bottles/containers on the bottom, and easily access both trays in the box.
These two tray boxes usually come in a variety of sizes and can be used to store miscellaneous cookie/cake decorating supplies too.
Piping Tips and Couplers: Hands down the best baking supply organizing hack is using a basic craft/art supply utility box with different compartments, to sort and organize piping tips and couplers.
These boxes are great for organizing these baking essentials because you can adjust the compartments to fit different size items and since the box has a large assortment of compartments, you can sort your piping tips buy size and by tip type (round, star, etc.).
Piping Bags and Treat Bags: I arranged these neatly on one of the shelves in my baking supply cart in my closet, however, the Project Boxes would work well for this as well.
Miscellaneous Cake/Muffin Pans: For me, I keep basic loaf pans and a couple of muffin tins in a cabinet in my kitchen with all the other pots and pans I use on a regular basis.
However, for all the “other” cake pans (tart pans, various size cake pans, donut pans, mini muffin tins) they found a home on my utility cart in my closet.
And a drum roll please….. here is the after!
Whew!! That was a lot of info, but it really didn’t take that much work or a large budget to clean and organize all that stuff! Luckily all of these products are pretty affordable and readily available online or at most craft stores.
With my baking closet organization makeover, I hope that I can keep everything in the right place and it gives me the push to get back to doing something I love, cake and cookie decorating, without feeling overwhelmed by my stash of tools.
I hope you found these baking supply organizing ideas helpful!

Looks very nice. Job well done. Quart mason jars also store several hundred cupcake liners. I have stored cookie cutters in the clear shoe box with lids.
