From Friendsgiving, to virtual happy hours with other work from home co-workers, to White Elephant parties, there are so many reasons to (responsibly) celebrate this holiday season!
To toast to this festive time of year, today we are sharing a fall flavored holiday cocktail that is the perfect cozy drink for a cool autumn night!
This Apple Cider Moscow Mule recipe is a fall twist on the classic buck cocktail. To maximize the fresh flavors of the season, we’ve swapped out the traditional lime juice for fresh apple cider and used bold, robust bourbon whiskey, in place of vodka, to add an even greater punch of flavor.
Served in classic ice-cold copper mugs with a fragrant cinnamon stick and a crisp Pink Lady Apple slice, you’ve got yourself a cozy drink for a cool autumn night or holiday celebration!
Helpful Tips and Information:
What is a Moscow Mule?
A Moscow Mule is type of buck, which is a cocktail made with ginger beer or ginger ale, citrus juice and various liquors (depending on the type of buck).
Traditionally, a Moscow Mule features vodka, lime juice, ginger beer and lime wedges and is classically served in a copper mug.
Apple Cider Mule Ingredients:
Apple Cider – I HIGHLY recommend using fresh apple cider in this Apple Cider Mule recipe. It is widely available during the fall and winter months and can normally be found at apple orchards, farmers markets or the produce section of most grocery stores. Apple cider has a more concentrated flavor than apple juice and typically has spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg added to it.
If fresh apple cider is unavailable, then you can substitute “pressed” apple juice.
I don’t recommend using regular (clear looking) apple juice or sparkling apple cider as a substitute, as neither will have as strong of an apple flavor.
Tip: Use leftover apple cider to make my Apple Cider Float!
Bourbon Whiskey – For this fall flavored Moscow Mule recipe, I swapped the traditional vodka, with a more robust and bold bourbon whiskey, specifically, 118 proof Still Austin Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey.
Austin, Texas based Still Austin Whiskey produces gin, a mashed whiskey and bourbon. Their Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey is a stronger, darker bourbon with warm flavor profiles of dark brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. These warm spices lend themselves well to the spicy ginger beer and toasty apple cider used in this autumn inspired Moscow Mule recipe.
Ginger Beer – Ginger beer is a non-alcoholic soft drink that is less sweet, less bubbly and has a stronger ginger flavor than traditional ginger ale. While ginger beer is traditional and recommended for a Moscow Mule, ginger ale can be substituted, if desired.
