HELPFUL TIPS AND INFORMATION:
French Onion Dip Ingredients:
- Unsalted butter – Olive oil or canola oil can be substituted for the butter.
- Sweet Vidalia or yellow onion – While not as sweet as a Vidalia onion, I usually use yellow onions because they caramelize nicely and are what I always have stocked in my pantry.
- Brown sugar – Dicing the onion and adding some salt and sugar to the onions as they sauté will help them caramelize faster!
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cream cheese
- Sour cream – While I haven’t tried it, I’m sure you could substitute full fat plain Greek yogurt for some or all of the sour cream called for in this recipe.
- Chives – Optional for garnish.
How to make French Onion Dip:
- Heat butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion, brown sugar, ¼ teaspoon each salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and caramelized, approximately 20-25 minutes.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce and set aside to cool completely.
- In a small food processor or blender, combine cooled caramelized onions, cream cheese, sour cream, and remaining salt and black pepper. Blend at high speed until smooth and creamy.
- Transfer dip to a serving bowl and top with fresh chives, if desired. Serve immediately with fresh veggies or chips, or store covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.
How long does French Onion Dip last:
This homemade French Onion Dip recipe will last in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
