Happy Spring! With the changing of seasons, we welcome longer days, warmer weather, gorgeous spring produce and some fun and often overlooked holidays, like Easter, Earth Day and Mother’s Day.
Since Easter is just a few weeks away, we are getting ready by eating the best jelly beans in all the land and dying ALL the eggs!
Easter eggs dyed with shaving cream were wildly popular years ago. The method included swirling food coloring around in shaving cream and rolling hard-boiled eggs in the dyed shaving cream, resulting in a tie-dye looking egg.
We like this version using Cool Whip to dye eggs, instead of shaving cream, to keep things edible and food safe. Not only will the eggs be safe to eat after dying, when little and curious hands decide to explore by putting things in their mouth, they will be safe “taste testing” whipped cream.
Whether you have kiddos or not, these super popular Whipped Cream Tie-Dye Easter Eggs are SO fun to make! We love the bright, bold colors and the tie dyed look. This is simply the best arts and crafts project to celebrate spring!
Helpful Tips and Information:
How to make hard boiled eggs:
Place eggs in a single layer in a large pot. Cover with 2 inches cold tap water.
Place pot on stove top and bring to a full rolling boil. Boil eggs for one minute. Remove from heat and cover the pot with a tight fitting lid. Let eggs sit in hot water for 11-12 minutes for large eggs.
Meanwhile, fill a large bowl with ice and cold tap water. After eggs have sat in water for the instructed amount of time, use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer eggs to the bowl of ice water. Allow eggs to cool in ice water for 5 minutes.
Use eggs as desired, peeling to eat and/or cook with or leaving the shell on to dye.

Helpful Tips and Tricks for Making Whipped Cream Dyed Easter Eggs:
1. You do not have to soak the eggs in vinegar before dying them. However, the vinegar helps the colors become more vibrant.
If you do not soak the eggs in vinegar before dying, please allow the eggs to sit in the cool whip mixture for at least 30 minutes.
2. After dying, eggs should be stored in the refrigerator!
3. Using gloves or tongs and wearing an apron is recommended, as food coloring may stain hands and clothes (but usually washes out).
4. Use disposable aluminum pan to hold whipped topping mixture and line table with newspaper or a disposable tablecloth for easy clean up. OR work outside on the patio/sidewalk.
Can you eat dyed easter eggs?
Yes, since we are using food safe food coloring and whipped cream (not shaving cream), these whipped cream dyed Easter eggs are perfectly fine to eat just as you would regular (not dyed) hard boiled eggs.
However, please keep in mind food safety recommendations and keep eggs in the refrigerator when not dying or hiding. Any eggs that have sat at room temperature for more than 4 hours should be discarded.
