Helpful Tips and Information:
How to make apple cider syrup?
- In a medium-sized saucepan, stir together both sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Add apple cider and lemon juice. Bring to a boil and continue boiling for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and butter.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator, use within a week or two.
What is the shelf life of apple cider syrup?
This homemade syrup should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container, such as a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid. When stored properly, apple cider syrup will last approximately 2 weeks.
Where to buy apple cider locally?
During the months of September and October you can usually find fresh apple cider at local apple orchards, farmers markets or pumpkin patches.
Many grocery stores will also sell apple cider, usually found in the refrigerated section of the produce department, from the end of August through the end of December.
However, if you can’t find apple cider, you can use “pressed” apple juice, such as Simply brand Pure Pressed Apple Juice. Pressed apple juice will look more “cloudy” than regular apple juice and have a stronger flavor.
DO NOT use traditional apple juice in this recipe as it will not work as well.
Apple Cider Syrup Uses:
Using our old-fashioned apple cider syrup recipe in cooking and baking is a delightful way to add a little sweet, spiced apple flavor to your favorite recipes. Here are some suggestions on how to incorporate it into other dishes:
- Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast and Oatmeal: Pour apple cider syrup generously over your stack of pancakes or waffles for a unique twist on a classic breakfast. We particularly love it on our Pumpkin Pancakes, Belgum Waffles and French Toast Casserole with Cinnamon Pecan Streusel. This breakfast syrup also goes well stirred into oatmeal.
- Desserts: Drizzle this syrup over No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream, tangy Greek yogurt, or serve over pumpkin bread pudding or cheesecake for a sweet and fruity finish.
- Cocktails: Craft custom apple infused cocktails by incorporating a little apple cider syrup. It pairs well with bourbon, whiskey, and rum.
- Sauces: Infuse sauces, like your favorite barbecue sauce, with apple cider syrup to add depth and a burst of flavor.
