Welcome to another installment of Dishin’ It Up – July 2016 Edition! Where I share my favorite books, music, food and fun from the previous month!
Whoa! What the heck happened to the month of July? I think I blinked and it disappeared. I vaguely remember 4th of July and eating so much good food throughout the entire month, and did take some time to just relax and go on a much needed vacation; but really, July was went by way faster than I had hoped!
Here’s a little peak into what I’ve been up to, plus some of my favorite eats, shows and music from this past month.
What I’ve been doing:
July has been busy, busy, busy! 4th of July weekend was spent partially in Louisiana with LOT of family while catching the sunset on the lake and eating lots of fried catfish and fresh summery desserts. On Independence Day, we fired up the grill with friends and lounged by the pool like every other American! 🙂
We then spent a good amount of time traveling to the (tiny) mountains of Northern Georgia for a friend’s wedding. The view, with lush forestry, deep red Georgia clay, and smoky fog was absolutely breathtaking and did wonders for my soul! For the bachelorette party we took a winery tour at the gorgeous and delicious Wolf Mountain Vineyards (I’ll share a blog post about it… hopefully soon!). Since the wedding was set in the mountains all the décor and colors were a sage, lavender and honey theme/color scheme which made everything magical and picture perfect!
What I’ve been eating:
Some how July became the month of the gyro, as we tried several new to us food trucks that specialized in gyros! My favorite was Big Fat Greek Gyros! The Hercules Gyro, with slow roasted lamb, fresh veggies, seasoned french fries, homemade tzatziki sauce and pillowy soft homemade pitas, was absolutely amazing!
Earlier this summer we purchased an Austin Passbook. It is a coupon book for local restaurants (mostly food trucks) and Austin area attractions. We purchased one last year and it is an awesome way to try new restaurants and visit old favorites. One place that we love was one of the stops this year in the passbook: 40 North Pizza. This little food truck produces some tasty brick oven gourmet pizzas! We indulged in one of the current specials, Wild Boar (with roasted shishito peppers and caramelized onions) and a classic, the margarita pizza! The Wild Boar pizza with that unique combination of toppings was out of this world! Get there fast and try it yourself before they take it off their menu!
Another “gyro” food truck we tried was Shawarma Point. While we tried both the chicken gryo (pictured) and the falafel wrap, the falafel wrap won at this local Austin joint! We love falafel but unfortunately a lot of places over cook it or it lacks flavor. The falafel (dished up in a pita wrap with fresh veggies) at Shawarma Point was fried a golden brown and topped with the house made spicy sauce, which made this falafel dish delicious!
What I’ve been watching:
Looking for a new show to get addicted to? You HAVE to check out Stranger Things (a Netflix original series). A friend recommended it and we blew through it in just a few nights! It is a sci-fi thriller set in the 80’s. Not only is does this show have a great story line. It is filmed really well, and reminds me a lot of cult classics from the 80’s. You must check it out!
And speaking of Netflix, I have been watching this Gilmore Girls trailer sneak peek on the Netflix Facebook page repeatedly. And yes, I already have November 25th marked on my calendar as “Gilmore Girls Day” and plan to do nothing but watch and eat more than my share of Chinese takeout, coffee and all sorts of other junk food. Who wants to join me??
