While I have many talents in the kitchen, extravagantly decorated layer cakes or detail oriented decorated sugar cookies just isn’t one of them!
The attention and focus required to do that type of tedious work, well, let’s just say I don’t have the patience for that! LOL!
I am perfectly fine slathering delicious holiday cut out cookies with velvety homemade buttercream frosting and a dash of festive sprinkles and calling it a day.
With that said, I do occasionally enjoy decorating a Nutter Butter cookie to look like goblin feet or a witch’s finger. In fact, over the years my go to holiday cupcake topper, is using decorated Oreos.
Yes, Oreos make a great cupcake decoration since those Oreos can transform into all kinds of Halloween cookie designs!
From pumpkin decorated Oreos to today’s Spider Oreo Cookies, these decorated cookie designs are easy enough to pull off that anyone can make them!
Serve these adorable and easy Halloween cookies as part of a Halloween dessert charcuterie board, cookie tray or as a cupcake topper for our Spider Cupcakes!
Helpful Tips and Information:
How to store Oreo Spider Cookies:
Carefully place decorated cookies in a flat layer in a food storage container. Cookies will keep at room temperature for 2 days.
Spider Oreos Ingredients:
Oreos – We use traditional double stuff Oreo cookies in this recipe. However, you can use regular Oreos, or whatever brand you prefer.
Chocolate Pocky – We use the chocolate Pocky, a chocolate dipped biscuit stick, to make the legs of the spider because they are already dipped in chocolate and match the chocolate Oreo well.
However, you could also use mini pretzel sticks or make Oreo Cookie Spiders with licorice.
Vanilla or Oreo Buttercream Frosting – Our Homemade Cookies and Cream Frosting really adds a nice layer of flavor to these spider cookies.
If you are making Spider Cupcakes, then you will have enough frosting leftover to make the spider cookies. However, if you are just making a batch of Oreo Frosting to assemble these cookies, then you will only need to make half a recipe.
You could also use storebought vanilla frosting to help assemble the cookies or melt extra chocolate chips and use that to help hold the cookies together.
Chocolate chips – We melt the chocolate chips to help adhere the eyeballs to the cookies. You can use frosting to attach the candy eyes, however, we have found using the frosting to attach the eyes a little messy.
Avocado or Coconut Oil – A little oil is needed to help the chocolate melt more smoothly.
Candy Eyeballs – You can order edible candy eyeballs online or pick them up at Walmart or any craft store this time of year.
Do you need special tools to make decorated Halloween cookies?
What we love about these simple cookie ideas is that you really don’t need any special tools or skills to make them! However, the one exception is we have found it is sometimes hard to pick up and place the tiny edible eyes or other decorations onto the Oreos, so a tool like these bottle neck tweezers can be helpful.
