As I sit and type this, a rare early fall rain storm is brewing outside. The temperatures have started to dip, in fact, I can almost smell that crisp, cool fall air trying with all its might to make an appearance.
This early tease of fall makes me want to curl up with a good book, a cozy flannel blanket and a fall scented pumpkin spiced latte. It also has my heart whispering to me, telling me to run to the kitchen to bake all the fall things, but I’m trying to hold back… at least for another week.
Of course, with it still being early September and autumn still “officially” a week away, I know, at least here in Texas, we have many more warm, summer-like days ahead of us.
So today, I’m bringing you a great happy hour treat to transition from summer into fall. A cold and creamy milkshake that is spiked with Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey, which adds a layer of deep, smooth, sophisticated flavor that cold brew coffee and bourbon are known for.
I know spiked milkshakes have been all the rage for many years now, but trust me when I say that this Coffee Bourbon Milkshake is bold and complex, yet has that familiar rich coffee flavor with a hint of smooth, oaky bourbon – unlike any milkshake cocktails you’ve had before!
I don’t know about you, but I’m welcoming fall with open arms and this refreshing cocktail recipe is such a dreamy way to say goodbye summer and hello fall!
Helpful Tips and Information:
What is Coffee Bourbon Whiskey?
In this recipe I used Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey. Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey is a high rye bourbon that has been finished with dark roasted Vienna coffee beans that have been cold brewed for at least 24 hours. The end result is a smooth coffee infused whiskey with a bold, smooth flavor with hints of caramel and chocolate.
Coffee Bourbon Milkshake Ingredients:
Hot fudge sauce – The hot fudge sauce in this recipe is purely optional, but it does and a pop of flavor that I think is delightful with each sip. You can use either homemade chocolate sauce or store-bought hot fudge sauce (or even caramel!). Personally, I prefer dark chocolate hot fudge sauce for the rich flavor and texture.
Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey – While I HIGHLY recommend using Devils River Coffee Bourbon Whiskey in this recipe, it is a newer product and may be harder to find.
If you can’t find the coffee bourbon, you can omit the milk and coffee bourbon called for in the recipe below and replace it with 3 tablespoons cold brew coffee and 3 tablespoons Devils River Bourbon Whiskey.
Vanilla bean ice cream – A good quality store bought vanilla bean ice cream is recommended for this recipe, however, you could also use my homemade No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream.
Whole milk – For a stronger drink, substitute milk with additional coffee bourbon.
Whipped cream – In my opinion, a milkshake isn’t a milkshake without whipped cream and nothing beats homemade whipped cream!
To make an easy homemade whipped cream, beat together 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream, 1 tablespoon powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to use.
